Week 14 - beginning with 16.12.2019

This week, we will be:

  • learning how to use a tuned percussion instrument (glockenspiel) in Music.
  • discussing bullies and how to deal with them in PSHE.
  • sewing a holiday decoration in DT.
  • practising songs for Christmas Coffee Morning!

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning how to do mixed operation word problems.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are continuing their learning about money. This includes converting pence to pounds, adding money amounts and making change.

Miss Robinson's class is consolidating their learning from this half term.

 

Reminder: Year 3 Christmas Party is in the afternoon on Monday 16th December. Children can bring in party clothes in a bag to get changed into after lunch.

Each child has signed up to bring a food item to share with the class.

NOTHING CONTAINING NUTS PLEASE!

 

Year 3 Christmas Coffee Morning is on Wednesday Morning. It will run from 9:15 to 9:45 am. No tickets required. Coffee, tea and mince pies will be available to buy.

 

Friday is TOY DAY! Children can bring in a toy or game to play with their friends. No electronics please :)

Week 13 - beginning with 9.12.2019

This week, we will be:

  • creating pop up books for our stories based on a historical setting in English
  • learning about sun safety in Science.
  • researching facts about Tutankhamun in History.
  • to experiment with a range of adhesive methods in Art.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are working through reasoning tasks involving time and duration.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are learning about money. This includes converting pence to pounds, adding money amounts and making change.

Miss Robinson's class is continuing their learning about money. 

 

Reminder: In order to participate in Outdoor PE, children need trainers. Plimsoles are not suitable for this type of weather. 

Week 12 - beginning with 2.12.2019

This week, we will be:

  • writing a story based on a historical setting in English
  • carrying out a shadow investigation in Science
  • researching and recording information about Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs in History
  • molding, carving and painting an Egyptian clay tablet in Art.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are working through reasoning tasks involving time and duration.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are continuing their learning of division with remainders using the bus stop method.

Miss Robinson's class is beginning their learning of money. 

 

Reminder: In order to participate in Outdoor PE, children need trainers. Plimsoles are not suitable for this type of weather.

Week 11 - beginning with 25.11.2019

This week, we will be:

  • Investigating the mummification process in History
  • Planning our very own documentary about mummification in English
  • Measuring shadows and how they change in Science.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning about time. 

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are using the bus stop method to solve division problems.

Miss Robinson's class is continuing their learning on division.

Week 10 - beginning with 18.11.2019

This week, is Careers Week! We will be:

  • Researching different careers and creating job applications for them. 
  • Writing a job advert for the ultimate teacher.
  • Participating in the Careers Fair on Wednesday.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are applying their knowledge of money to real life scenarios.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are continuing to use the written method of multiplication to solve problems. They are also using these skills to spend money using a budget.

Miss Robinson's class is learning about division.   

 

Reminder: On Friday, children can come dressed in what they want to be when they are older!

Week 9 - beginning with 11.11.2019

This week, we will be:

  • English - We are going to be writing our own playscripts based on our new book Ms. Frizzles Adventure - Ancient Egypt!
  • Science - This week we are going to be investigating how light if reflected.
  • Art - We are going to be learning all about Canopic Jars and sketching them.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning how to add and subtract money and find change.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are learning to use the written method of multiplication to solve problems. They are also solving reasoning questions.

Miss Robinson is applying their multiplication skills to real life scenarios and using the Singapore Bar Method to solve problems.  

 

Ancient Egyptian Art Work

Last week in Art, we starting learning about the Ancient Egyptian Pyramids and experimented with colour to create our own Ancient Egyptian art work! Have a look at some of the brilliant work we created below!

 

 


 

Careers Week 18th - 22nd November 

We would love it if parents would come and talk to their child's class about their career! If you are interested, please speak to your child's class teacher to arrange a time and day. Alternatively, if you are interested in having a stall at the Careers Fair (Wednesday 20th November 9:00-11:45) please speak to Mrs Giles or Mr Holroyd. It would be great to see lots of our wonderful parents involved.

Autumn Term 2 - Week 1 - commencing 4th November 2019

 

Welcome back Year 3! We hope you had a lovely half term.

This week we are starting brand new topic - The Egyptians! All the teachers are really excited about starting the topic and can't wait to show you what we are going to be learning.

 

In Maths:

Mrs Frost and Miss Hill's groups are going to be starting their work on division and solving some problems based on this.

Miss Henniger and Miss McGarvie's group are going to be working on multiples and calculating multiples of 3, 4, 8 and 50.

Miss Robinson's group is starting work on multiplication and they are going to be representing multiplication number sentences in different ways. 

 

Week 7 - beginning with 14.10.2019

This week, we will be:

  • English - We are going to be working on letter writing. We are going to be looking at the features of formal and informal letters and then write our own!
  • Science - This week we are going to be planning our own magnet investigations!
  • Character Curriculum - Our traits for this half term Courage and Motivation. We are going to be learning all about these traits and how they can help us in school and at home.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning how to problem solve using multiplication and applying our learning of the grid method.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are applying their knowledge of written methods of addition and subtraction when solving problems.  

Miss Robinson's maths are continuing their learning on subtraction and looking at ways to subtract numbers mentally. 

 

Please note...

We have Parents' Evening on Monday and Tuesday for 3GH, 3F, 3R and 3M. We are looking forward to seeing you and celebrating your child's successes.

Week 6 - beginning with 07.10.2019

This week, we will be:

  • English - We are going to be continuing with our learning on information texts and writing a non-chronological report about France.
  • Music - This week we are going to be listening to pieces of music from a range of French composers and talking about how the music makes us feel.

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning different methods for multiplication.

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are continuing their learning on column addition and subtraction and finding patterns when adding 100s, 10s and 1s.

Miss Robinson's maths are starting their learning on subtraction.

 

Just to make you aware...

In Year 3, we have had a few issues with cards (Pokémon cards, Match Attax, Disney Cards etc.) so children are no longer allowed to bring these in to school. We appreciate your support on this matter, if you have any questions, please see your child's teacher.

 

Week 5 - beginning with 30.09.2019

This week, we will be:

  • English - looking at the rules of speech and how we can use this in our writing.
  • Music - we have started our Wider Learning Opportunity and our Strings lessons are well underway! We are thoroughly enjoying these lessons and learning to play the instruments!
  • Science - continuing with investigating attracting and repelling with magnets

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning about column subtraction trying to solve problems and reasoning within this. 

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are focusing on column subtraction and are going to be learning all about exchanging.

Miss Robinson's maths are continuing with their learning on addition. 

 

Reminder: We have an INSET Day this Friday 4th October.

Children need to have both a Games (outdoor) kit and PE (indoor) kit. For Games, they need proper trainers, long joggers and long sleeves. For PE, children need shorts or leggings and a white t-shirt.

Week 4 - beginning with 23.09.2019

This week, we will be:

  • English - writing non-chronological reports about the Minpins and starting to look at the rules of speech punctuation.
  • DT - making and eating our baguettes!  Please remember to bring in your ingredients on the correct day.  (3R, 3F and 3GH on Tuesday.  3M and 3JH on Thursday).
  • Science - investigating attracting and repelling with magnets

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are learning about column addition and problem solving. 

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are focusing on column addition.

Miss Robinson's maths are focusing on addition.

This week, we will be:

  • English - writing with suspense as Billy is chased through the forest in 'The Minpins'
  • DT - food tasting and planning our delicious French baguettes
  • Science - investigating the properties of magnets

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are problem solving using place value. 

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarvie are learning about place value and how to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100.

Miss Robinson's maths are learning about the value of each digit in a number. 

 

Reminder: Children need to have both a Games (outdoor) kit and PE (indoor) kit. For Games, they need proper trainers, long joggers and long sleeves. For PE, children need shorts or leggings and a white t-shirt.

Week 2 - beginning with 09.09.2019

This week, we will be:

  • describing the forest in our class text 'The Minpins' during English
  • investigating friction on different surfaces in Science
  • learning how to say different colours in French

 

In Maths, Miss Hill and Mrs Frost are looking at place value and number lines. 

Miss Henninger and Miss McGarve are learning how to represent numbers to 1000 in different ways and finding 10 and 100 more or less than a number. Miss Robinson's maths are learning to partition numbers and count in multiples.

Some of our Character Curriculum work!

Week 1 - beginning with 02.09.2019

Welcome back!  We hope you have had a fabulous Summer break.  We have lots of exciting things planned for Year 3 and we are really looking forward to the start of a new term.

 

This week we will be looking at our character curriculum starting with 'courage'.  We will also begin to find out about our France topic, which we will continue with throughout the Autumn Term. Our English work will be based around this topic as well as the book 'Minpins' by Roald Dahl.

 

Keep checking our website for updates relating to homework and activities that we have been doing in class. Maths and class homework will be handed out on a Friday for returning the following Thursday. Maths homework needs to completed every week whilst class homework is completed bi-weekly. There will also be spelling homework to prepare for a test each week. The spellings booklets will be coming home in the next couple of days. Remember to read for at least four times a week and record it in your organiser.

 

A big focus this year in maths is times tables. Your child will be given a login for Times tables Rockstars to practise at home!
