Autumn 2019

We have really enjoyed all our Christmas celebrations. Thank you for supporting our Christmas Coffee Morning. We are sure you will agree that the children sounded fabulous. We have had a fantastic Autumn Term and are looking forward to lots of exciting events in the Spring Term. Our theme is 'chocolate' so we will be finding out where it comes from and how it is made. Our English lessons will be based around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Keep checking our pages in the new year to find out what we will be getting up to.

Week beginning 16th December 2019

 

We have enjoyed writing winter poems and painting our mosaic tiles this week. 

 

There are lots of Christmas celebrations and activities going on next week.

Tuesday 17th December 9:15am - it is the Year 4 Christmas Coffee Morning.  We will be singing songs and reading the winter poems we have written in class.  There will also be a performance by the lower school choir.  We really hope you can make it.

 

Wednesday 18th December PM - it is the Year 4 Christmas Party! Your child will be bringing home a letter indicating which item of food they have offered to bring in for the party.

 

Friday 20th December - Staff panto and toy day (oh no it isn't...oh yes it is!!) laugh

 

In addition to all this festive fun, we will also be carrying on with some curriculum lessons:

English - we will be writing a diary from a character's perspective using the new John Lewis Christmas advert as a stimulus.

History - we will be finding out how the Romans travelled and how they built their roads

RE - we will be making a Christingle and learning about its symbolism at Christmas.

 

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Year 3 visited the Year 4 classrooms to share some stories they have written linked to Ancient Egypt.

4H Making Clay Roman Mosaics

Week beginning 9th December 2019

 

We have finally completed our news reports about Boudicca's battle with the Roman army and have started to make our mosaic tiles using clay.  We enjoyed finding out what rich Romans used to eat and planning a Roman feast.  Another portion of pigs' trotters anyone?!!

 

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

English - we will be looking at the structure of different poems before writing our own.  Some of them will be read out at our Christmas coffee morning.

History/Geography - we will be looking at where Hadrian's wall is located and investigating how and why it was built.

Science - we will be investigating the best material for ear defenders.

Art - we will be painting our mosaic tiles.

 

We are continuing to learn the songs we will be singing at the Christmas Coffee morning on Tuesday 17th December from 09:15 to 09:45.  We hope you can you join us.

Week beginning 2nd December 2019

 

We have enjoyed starting our news reports about Boudicca's defeat by the Roman army and finding out more about life during Roman times by investigating Roman artefacts.

 

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

English - we will be continuing to write our newspaper reports.  We will also be reading and writing poems.

History - we will be looking at what the Romans ate.

RE - we will be exploring the use of light during Advent.

Science - we will be investigating what happens to sound when the distance from the sound source increases.

Art - we will be starting to make mosaic tiles using clay.

 

This week, we will also be starting to learn the songs we will be singing at the Christmas Coffee morning on Tuesday 17th December.

Miss Hill's and Miss Cutts' maths groups have been practising using metre sticks and trundle wheets to measure objects in the playground.

Week beginning 25th November 2019

 

We had a fabulous time last week finding out about different careers and dressing up for our dream job. yes  Have a look at the photos below to see some of the jobs the children would like to do when they are older.

 

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

English - we will be looking at the features of newspaper reports.

History - we will be using artefacts to find out more about life during Roman Britain.

Music - we will be practising compositions using the recorder.

Science - we will be investigating the pattern between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produce it.

Art - To record observations of Roman mosaics.

 

Remember to read every evening for at least 10 minutes and record it in your organiser. Please bring in your spelling folder on the day of your test. The test this week will be based on words which have sub- as a prefix (for example, submarine).

 

Please make sure that children bring their coats in everyday as it gets colder and make sure they have long jogging bottoms in their PE kit as well as a warm jacket.

Week beginning 18th November 2019

 

We really enjoyed writing our Roman myths last week.

 

As this week is CAREERS WEEK, there are lots of extra activities planned.  Keep your eye on the website for photos to see what we are getting up to.

 

Wednesday 20th November is our careers fair in the junior hall.

 

REMEMBER TO DRESS UP ON FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER IN AN OUTFIT WHICH SHOWS WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE WHEN YOU'RE OLDER.

Enlgish - we will be researching different careers and writing a diary or report about a day in the life of a paramedic.

History - we will be investigating the impact of Roman technology

PSHE - we will be finding out about the world of work and what influences people's spending.

WELCOME BACK!  We hope you had a fantastic half term.  We have lots of exciting things planned over the next few weeks.  We will be continuing our Roman theme through our Literacy work and in History and Geography lessons.  We also have Careers Week during week beginning 18th November.  Keep your eye on the website for further updates and photographs.  Our topic in Science is investigating how sounds are heard.

We hope that you enjoyed Roman Day last week! Thank you for the wonderful volcano homework that has been sent in. There are some pictures below of some of the best ones!

 

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

Literacy - we will be writing a diary entry, imagining we were there when Mt Vesuvius erupted

Geography - we will be learning about the location of volcanoes.

RE - we will be looking at the similarities and differences between the two holy books we have been looking at this half term, The Qu'ran and The Bible.

PSHE - we will be dicussing a philosophical question

Week beginning 7th October 2019

 

A very exciting week in year four this week! Roman Day on Wednesday (4P, 4HB and 4G) and Thursday (4C and 4H). Come in dressed as a Roman! We can't wait to meet Titus the Roman centurion for a fantastic day.

 

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

Literacy - we will be finishing our book 'Ditherus Wart: Accidental Gladiator' and are beginning a topic on diary entry writing, based on the eruption of Mt Vusuvius.

Science - we will be looking at the state changes that occur during a volcano eruption.

Geography - we will be learning about the structure of the Earth and how volcanoes are formed.

RE - we will be looking at the similarities and differences between the two holy books we have been looking at this half term, The Qu'ran and The Bible.

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

Literacy - we will be learning about using fronted adverbials and continue to read 'Ditherus Wart: Accidental Gladiator'.

Science - we will be investigating which chocolate melts quickest. Will it be milk, dark or white?

History - we will be learning about Julius Caeser's attempted invasion of Britain.

Music - we will be using recorders to play different length of notes and learning their notation on the stave.

Week beginning 23rd September 2019

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week.

Literacy - we will be making our own gladiator schools and writing descriptions about them using different senses (see photos below of children making their gladiator schools).

Design and Technology - we will be evaluating the designs of catapults similar to those used by the Roman army.  Once we have evaluated these designs, we will practise making similar types of mechanisms such as lever and pivot.  This research will help us to design and make our own catapults.  We will test them out at the end of the week to see which mechanism will fire a missile the furthest! (Look at the photos below to see some examples of our catapults).

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

Literacy - we will be learning about writing dialogue using inverted commas and writing our own conversation between some of the characters from 'Ditherus Wart: Accidental Gladiator'

Science - we will be doing a carousel of experiments to investigate and observe changes of state.

History - we will be learning about the power of the Roman army, specifically drawing and labelling Roman soldiers.

RE - we will continue our holy books topic by learning about the rules for looking after The Qur'an .

Well done for your first week in year four. smiley We have enjoyed getting to know you all and hearing what you got up to over the summer holidays, especially those wonderful sunflowers you grew!  We have made a good start to our Romans topic by exploring the expansion of The Roman Empire.

 

Here is a flavour of what we will be getting up to this week:

Literacy - we will be writing a character description after reading the first chapter of our book for this half term 'Ditherus Wart: Accidental gladiator'.

Science - we will be starting our topic on Solids, Liquids and Gases by grouping different materials.

History - we will be looking at and ordering timeline of The Romans.

Music - we will be beginning to learn how to play the recorder by learning how to hold it correctly.

Welcome back!  We hope you have had a fabulous Summer break.  We have lots of exciting things planned for Year 4 and we are really looking forward to the start of a new term.

 

This week we will be looking at our character curriculum starting with 'courage'.  We will also begin to find out about the Romans which is our topic for the Autumn Term.  Our literacy work will be based on a Roman-themed fiction book called 'Ditherus Wart - Accidental Gladiator'.

 

Keep your eye on the website for updates relating to homework and activities that we have been doing in class.  Maths and class homework will be handed out on a Friday for returning the following Thursday.  There will also be spelling homework to prepare for a test each week.  Remember to read for at least 10 minutes a day and record in your organiser.

 

A big focus this year in maths is times tables so remember to keep practising using times tables rock stars.
