Change Makers in our world (past and present)

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is famously known for her stand against racial inequality. Rosa was asked by the bus driver to give up her seat for a white passenger – a total injustice. Rosa wanted to make a stand... by sitting down and refusing to give up her seat.

Rosa demonstrated the importance of standing up for what you believe in and to support people or groups who are treated badly – she is a Change Maker.

Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg is an environmental activist. She was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2003. When she was eight, she started learning about climate change. The more she learned, the more baffled she became as to why so little was being done about it. In August 2018, Greta decided to take action. Instead of going to school, she made a large sign that read ‘SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE’, and calmly sat down outside the Swedish parliament. Her aim? To make politicians take notice and act to stop global warming. Greta is now known worldwide for her action against climate change – she has met many world leaders to discuss the issue. Greta wants to preserve our world for future generations – she is a Change Maker.

Richard Whitehead

Richard Whitehead, who was born in Nottingham, is a great role model for us as a Change Maker. He is a gold medal winner in the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games and an inspiration to so many people. Not only has he overcome so many barriers to achieve what he has done but he uses his power and reach to support and encourage others, as well as being an ambassador for several charities.
